Streetmate is a team of youth workers who work to reach out to young people in their community. Through a mix of detached or outreach youth work we offer support and guidance – referring young people to services where they would benefit from further support.
Streetmate workers go out on foot, with their mobile unit or work in settings where young people hang out. Sometimes Streetmate workers just sit and chat. or they might put on some games and activities for a group such as rounders or football. Whatever they are doing they are working to build trust with the young people and the surrounding community.
We have a long experience of working with a variety of issues facing young people such as:
- involvement in anti-social behaviour or petty crime
- getting into trouble at school or being frequently excluded
- being affected by relationship problems
- using drugs, alcohol or other harmful substances
- being at risk of homelessness or family breakdown
Focusing on the future is really important for young people. This means helping them to access training or further education is a big part of what we offer.
We empower young people to make positive decisions about their lives and build their confidence and self-esteem, enabling them to access opportunities so they can reach their full potential.
